‘The Bloody Chamber’ by Angela Carter

This year the Folio Society and House of Illustration competition was to illustrate three stories and the cover of Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber & Other Stories.  As soon as I started reading I had a good feeling about it and I was right, this has been one of my all-time favourite projects.  Front cover (rough only)

Full cover (rough only)

‘Deliciously Stylish’ ctd.

I’ve been shortlisted for the Zizzi Fresh Talent competition!  (And somewhat less importantly I have found out how to take a screen shot.)

Please excuse the cheesy blurb – I was feeling sleepy and reckless.  Oh, and not to put too fine a point on it, but it’s kind of a voting thing, so….

The Owl and The Pussycat

My best friend once told me that she thought this was the most romantic poem there is.  Maddy is fantastically well-read and always makes brilliant recommendations, and her sister had asked her for suggestions of what to read at a friend’s wedding.  Her sister wasn’t convinced by this particular idea, and when Maddy told me, incredulous, I realised this summed up almost everything I love most about her.

For Madeleine (you’ll get the real thing when I find a nice frame)

The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
“O lovely Pussy! O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are, you are, you are,
What a beautiful Pussy you are.”
Pussy said to the Owl “You elegant fowl,
How charmingly sweet you sing.
O let us be married, too long we have tarried;
But what shall we do for a ring?”
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows,
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose, his nose, his nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.
“Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling your ring?”
Said the Piggy, “I will”
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon.
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand.
They danced by the light of the moon, the moon, the moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

‘Deliciously Stylish’ for Zizzi

… Comme moi, non?
Zizzi (the restaurant) has this program ‘Fresh Talent’ for getting young creative types working for them. This is the second time they’ve run the ‘Deliciously Stylish’ competition, in which designers and illustrators can submit an image for the menu cover inspired by the above title. Here is my entry – a little chef/seamstress uses common Zizzi ingredients to sew together a deliciously stylish creation!

‘Help! I Need Somebody’

Cover illustration for a pamphlet written by child psychotherapist Judith Edwards, to explain the process of child therapy to prospective child patients and their parents. It’s something I greatly believe in and it’s been a joy to contribute to it.

Practise makes…

I’ve been flexing my editorial muscles (for self-promotion only etc etc).
^ For an article about the antiques markets and shops of London.

^ An article about the rich artistic history of Florence.

^ Bit more complicated, this one. This article discussed Britons’ attitudes towards food – the desire for healthy, home-grown & delicious food clashing with an unwillingness to commit substantial time to preparing & cooking, and the expectation to be able to buy food at lower and lower prices.
